How to get traffic

Hubs, articles, blogs and personal pages

First let me say this is not going to be a keyword related article as one thing I have found since I started writing hubs towards the end of December 2011. Is my understanding on Keywords and SEO is very limited. Something I have still not mastered, although I get views through Google, Yahoo and Bing it is more by chance than it is through planning. One thing I have come to know when it comes to getting traffic to your articles it is not always the best option. I have had far more traffic through social networks and other “front page” websites than I have actually had through search engines. Although it can take some time for search engines to rank your articles high enough to be found often in results.

So what are these other ways, well many are well known others are not. I am going to list all of the ones I have tried in the past week. Giving an honest opinion on each of them. Linking back where needed.

Twitter

The first one is Twitter. Although not fantastic on its own as your article Tweets can quickly be swallowed by everyone else's I found in the early days of writing this was actually a great way to get noticed. I got many follows from those who I had met on Twitter and it can be a great way to jump start or boost your traffic.

One of the great things about Twitter is you don't have to visit someone’s page to see their messages, if someone is following you they will often see what you have said in their feed. So a good way to get like minded Twitter users is to go directly to the Hubpages Twitter itself.

Which can be found here: – Don't forget to follow them!

So, you are on the Hubpages Twitter page, you can then click on “followers” to see who is following them, now many of those if not all of them are actually Hubpages members just like you. If you go down and follow a handful. Keep in mind it is against Twitters terms of use to spam follow thousands of people and then “unfollow” them. Each person you follow will get an email letting them know a new person is following them and most will return the follow.

It is common to see people pass this sort of thing up as pointless. But if you are actually planning on being apart of a community like Hubpages and that is what it is at the end of it all a community of people writing. It helps to dive head first into it and meet people. I found by following a total of nine hundred people, not all from Hubpages but in general about four hundred followed me back and many would read my Tweets about my articles and often re-tweet them allowing your article to be seen by their followers also.

I was using the Hubpages Twitter as an example. But there is more you can do to meet your target audience on Twitter itself. Let's say for example you are advertising your new article on how to make money online. E-commerce. Well, a simple Google search or a Twitter one will show you the groups often thousands strong in followers all about making money online. Do the same thing there, following those who have followed e-commerce based Twitter users and as they follow you back post your own article on the subject.

But that is just Twitter. What I am actually going to be writing about in this article is how to get “instant traffic” this is not always the case but I named it so after seeing my own results.

Traffic to a website

Reddit

The first site I am going to explain about is Reddit, although I will not be going into great detail as alocsin already wrote a very detailed and helpful article series on them which you can see below my own opinion on the service.

For me this was the first main stream “front page” website I had tried and on first look it is not fantastic it looks very out of date and almost as if it was designed for use during the early days of the internet. Although it will do wonders if you can get it to work there are several walls to overcome and worry about while trying this service. First off the community itself in my time there I have come to know they are about as nice as a brick to the head to be blunt about it. I believe Reddit is second only to 4chan for trolls, spammers and general internet “thugs”. You may find not only are you getting views but also unwanted attention from spammers and getting views is not always that easy.

Reddit's own spam blocker seems to do too good of a job meaning many new users will never actually have their submitted content made public simply because the spam bot has filtered it out. The communities staff called moderators also seem to have a bad an attitude as many of their users. So for a friendly community feel it is not the place to turn, but should you be able to get articles passed their spam filters it is without doubt the best place to get instant traffic.

Although there are ways around their spam filter, which seems to snag most new users straight away, in alocsin's article it is well explained what to do should your work be tagged. Once you are passed all the teething pains the traffic you can actually get from Reddit is mind blowing and one of alocsin's articles proves just how much you can benefit from using the service. With numbers as high as 3,000 in eight hours. For me I have been managing a steady two hundred a day and I feel that is because of the type of articles I submitted they will only attract a small group of the community. Although the website itself does not cover all areas, post a poem and prepare to get “trolled”. But everything from Gaming to World events is covered.

Trolls, comments and abuse

With many of these ideas above, you will find both good and bad users coming to your pages. Many, like Reddit. Will attract trolls, you still get views but you may end up with the odd rude or out of place comment. This will tend to happen if you post links back to either religious or political topics. Learn about trolls here.

Thanks for mentioning my Reddit articles. I'm just now experimenting with Stumbleupon and it seems to show promise. Have tried Twitter for many months with no success. Voting this Up and Useful.

Voted up. And Reddit hates me. I unsubscribed cuz I felt like I needed a degree in redditology. I'll try again, but I need to let the fizz die down...that site freaks me out. Otherwise, really useful hub - I've already opened new tabs so I can take your advice and boost my presence on some of those other sites. :)
